JOB-SHADOW PROJECT"If we could sell our experiences for what they would cost us, we'd all be millionaires!" - Abigail Van Buren

During the months of April and May, many of the 10th grade students who attend LCTI will have the privilege of being involved in a job-shadow program. Over the course of 8 Wednesdays, students will be excused from school and will be placed a local business as an apprentice. In English class, we will be working to prepare and educate students before and during the experience in an effort to maximize what they can get out of it.

In English class we will be discussing and/or covering:
  • Professionalism (dress, expectations, etc.)
  • Business Etiquette (how to speak and act in various forums)
  • Interviewing Skills
  • Resumes & Cover Letters
  • Career Research (educational requirements, necessary skills, job outlook, etc.)
  • A 5 Year Plan Proposal

STAGE 2: JOURNALING YOUR EXPERIENCES:"Write to be understood, speak to be heard, read to grow." ~ Lawrence Clark Powell

After every Wednesday job-shadow day, students will have an opportunity to write journals and reflections in class about their experiences. For every day, students will be given an aspect of the experience to write about. Some days, it will simply be summarizing his/her experience, while other days, students will be required to conduct research or answer specific questions. In the end, all of the journals will be put together in a nicely formatted final paper

Here are the journal downloads, along with the days they accompany:

  • JOURNAL 1: Typing Date (4/16/2009)
  • JOURNAL 2: Typing Date (4/23/2009)
  • JOURNAL 3: Typing Date (5/1/2009)
  • JOURNAL 4: Final Reflection on the Experience: Typing Date: (5/---/2009)

STAGE 3: FIVE-YEAR PLAN PROPOSAL:"You got to be careful if you don't know where you're going, because you
might not get there." ~ Yogi Berra
For the last part of our job-shadow experience, students will be asked to develop a 5 year proposal plan. This plan will be a detailed explanation of what they will have to do over the next 5 years in order to get hired and become a successful (insert career here)!
